Elizabeth Ann is a nine-year-old orphan girl who lives in the city home of her father's frail aunt, Great-Aunt Harriet, and is taken care of by Aunt Harriet's daughter whom she calls Aunt Frances. Elizabeth Ann, who is timid and small for her age, feels that she is understood by only Aunt Frances who coddles her and expects her to live a sheltered life which results in her being neither strong nor well. However, Aunt Harriet becomes very sick and must quickly be taken to a warmer climate, so Betsy is sent to live the nearby Lathrop cousins. When she arrives, she finds that they have an outbreak of scarlet fever, so she must go to stay with the dreaded Putney cousins of her mother on their farm near Hillsboro, VT.
Uncle Henry, Aunt Abigail, and Cousin Ann, who all call her Betsy, are very different from Great-Aunt Harriet and Aunt Frances. While in Vermont, Betsy learns how to drive a horse-drawn wagon, starts helping with meal preparation, walks alone to a school where Aunt Frances has not told the teachers to pamper her, starts a sewing society among her friends and schoolmates to help a needy boy, and celebrates her tenth birthday by going to the Necronsett Valley Fair over in Woodford where she is accidentally left behind and must get herself and her little friend Molly home by themselves. By the end of her stay, she is no longer pale, thin, and weak, but tanned, muscular, and strong. What will Aunt Frances think when she comes to take Elizabeth Ann home? And will Betsy decide to go with her or will she want to stay with the Putneys?
Understood Betsy is a delightful story. Dorothy Canfield Fisher helped to introduce the Montessori method of teaching into the United States, and this book reflects her belief that children learn best in natural settings rather than artificial environments. This sounds a lot like what homeschoolers have found, doesn't it? Mrs. Fisher's views that school should be a place for actual education and learning rather than a mere formality may seem quaint to some but helps to explain what so many of us have found objectionable with modern public education. The word "gosh" is used a few times, and one man says, "Lord, no." There is one reference to dancing. Some have objected to what they feel is the author's somewhat heavy-handed "preachiness," but it is still a wonderful book and will give children a good view of what life was like almost a hundred years ago.
I read this book as a child and bought it to read to my 10-year-old daughter. Wow, it was actually even better than I remembered. It is funny, spirited, and has a delightful rural setting that is a pleasure to read about in its own right. Most importantly, it is filled with well-drawn characters who, without being simpy, model of some of the best values I have ever come across in a children's book. Such values as kindness, attentiveness to the needs of others (both in your community and in your immediate family), an expectation that everyone in a family will pull their weight whatever their age, a disregard for the conventional trappings of success and instead a focus on one's actions and character. All of this subtly rendered, in a story that moves along swiftly and entertainingly. Lastly, there something special in the book's close, even tender attention to a young girl's inner journey from mousy timidity/entitlement to confidence and competence both as a member of her new family and in the larger world. While not in any explicitly feminist in its ideals, there seems to me something quietly feminist in its understated assumption that a girl's personal journey can be mostly interesting with reference to its moral, communal and personal dimensions, rather than how it affects her appearance and her potential appeal as a girlfriend/wife etc. So glad I found it again!
This is an excellent novel set in the early twentieth century. The author was very well known in the first half of the twentieth century. The author is worthy for study. She had a great interest in the field of education. That interest is evident n this novel.
This novel reminds me of other novels about children. It reminds me a little bit of "Anne Of Green Gables", but, as I recollect, is somewhat shorter. This is a little girl who has lost her parents. She embarks on a series of childhood adventures with various relatives. In he course of these adventures, she learns a great number of life lessons. She also learns a lot about herself. It is truly a delightful story.
As a grandparent, I am looking for stories to read with my grandchildren and grand nieces and grand nephews. This story is perfect for such an endeavor. I believe it will suit a young lady more than a young man.

For the Renaissance Classics edition Be warned that this edition is very poorly typeset. The words run way too close to the spine so that you will have to press it wide open just to read it, even though it is a thin book. Even the one-sentence description on the back runs needlessly close to the edges of the cover -- very cheap-looking. Also, instead of typical indented paragraphs, this looks like they left the defaults on in InDesign and there is an empty line between each paragraph with no indentations, so it looks like an email rather than a book. The image quality of the illustrations is very poor and they used a funky sans-serif font. Very weird.
