Some things are sweeter than revenge.
“I need a boyfriend.”
Hearing those words from the mouth of his very straight ex-friend is enough to make columnist and editor Nate Gray choke on his Corona. It’s been thirteen years since Kellan Brooks’s father crushed Nate’s family on his climb to wealth and power. Even longer since he entrusted Kellan with the confession that he might be gay—only to have his best friend out and humiliate him to their entire high school. The last thing Nate expects is Kellan begging for his help.
Breaking off his engagement to a senator’s daughter was the last straw for Kellan’s CEO father. Frustrated at being cut off, his father’s stinging words—that he wishes Kellan had never been born—still ringing in his ears, Kellan turns to Nate. In a move worthy of a corporate raider, Kellan plans the ultimate revenge. Come out as the boyfriend of the man his homophobic father betrayed.
Convincing Nate to play along isn’t easy. It’s even harder to figure out why the lie feels so close to the truth.
Warning Contains old friends, old enemies, a dramatic cat rescue, soft drink references and a lot of teasing before the steamy sex. Readers are cautioned against drinking any beverage while reading to avoid accidental snorting or spraying of said beverages.

Bad Company Bad in Baltimore Book 1 edition by KA Mitchell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Well, this one was a bit interesting. I think right from the beginning I was thrown off by the (in my opinion) unrealistic premise. How did Keelan come to the conclusion that pretending to be with Nate would get revenge on his father? How did Keelan decide that he wanted to be with Nate sexually all of a sudden? Add in the fact that Keelan was "famous" and the father was super rich and it seemed like several stories rolled into one. The whole gay bashing scene was upsetting to me because I don't think those who have actually lived this hell would feel justice was served.
Learning to be poor, learning to be employed, learning to be gay and learning to have sex with a man who actually used to be your best friend...the concept was good, but maybe there was a bit too much going on at once to be fully effective (again, only my opinion). All that being said, it was a fairly good book. Once I got the flow if the writing, it was pretty easy to read. I would only recommend this to a select few.
A quite entertaining book, Bad Company tells us the story of Nate Gray and Kellan Brooks. Nat and Kellan were best pals when they were kids, but when Nate decides to out himself and admit he is gay, Kellan turns his back on him and ignores him at high school, where Nate suffers continue abuse. Years later, Kellan comes to Nate because he needs a place to stay, and offers him the chance of revenge he has been waiting for so long. Things are not easy at the beginning between these two very different characters, but somehow the old friendship reignites and turns into something more, something none of them knows how to deal with.
I have no complaints about the book; it was quite ok, not a memorable one but fast and entertaining. It is funny how my opinion of the main characters changed as the book moved on. At the beginning of the book, I thought Kellan was a jerk who was undoubtedly abusing Nate, but by the end of the book Nate seemed the real jerk and Kellan the really nice guy. A very fast evolution of the characters taking place in a very short time(just a couple of months), somehow undermines the credibility of the story, but it is romance and those things happen in romance. I will continue reading the series. It seems promising.
This is one of those books where the set-up had me really nervous too contrived and implausible, the kind of thing that Hollywood loves for its rom-coms, featuring characters who never behave like actual human beings. But I am learning not to underestimate K. A. Mitchell, because both Nate and Kellan are two of my favorites of her characters. I have a soft spot for couples who have known each other forever, and you believe it with these two. I also liked that they were seriously flawed but not to the point that I hated them. I spent the first half of the book worrying that Kellan was too big a jerkwad to be redeemed and Nate was too completely superior, and then halfway through the balance shifted. Kellan was a sweet-heart and Nate was never going to get the stick out of his you-know-where to have a relationship. All of this is just to say I was invested. I loved seeing Kellan turn into an actual worthwhile human being, I found Nate's hyper-complicated self-righteousness endearing.
Minor Spoiler I'd also praise Mitchell for not turning the dad into a caricatured villain. I generally find them tiresome in and of themselves, in addition to being unrealistic and overly convenient. The father wasn't a good guy, but he wasn't all things that are evil and hateful either. It fit with the story well since it belied Nate's black and white attitude, but it also made the story more realistic and satisfying.
Bottom Line K. A. Mitchell is probably my favorite M/M contemporary author and this book is a great example of why.
